The presentation:

Outside In: African-American History in Iowa, 1838-2019 is a 18 minute

audio-visual program which takes the audience on a journey through the highlights of Iowa’s African-American history from its territorial beginning in 1838 to the present via images and a synchronized recorded narrative. The overall effect is like watching a movie. The underlying theme is that African-American History is a history of an inseparable, intertwined, and intimate relationship between so-called “black” and “white” Americans which has ranged from marriage to murder in the heart of our nation’s history.

Most of the photographs come from family collections revealing the truth that all of us make history, that “all of our stories are one story,” and that Outside In is “a story for all Iowans.” In the question period after the show, the audience is encouraged to share their own stories and pieces of our rich African-American heritage.

The presenter:

Dr. Hal Chase was born in Des Moines in 1943, but he grew up in legally segregated Frankfort, KY from 8 to 18 where he learned about American Civilization inside and out of the public schools there and in the classrooms of Washington & Lee U. (B. A.-1965), Stanford Univ. (M.A.-1966), and those of the Univ. of Pennsylvania (PhD-1973). He learned more about it by teaching courses in U. S. and African-American History from 1966-2009, the last 20 of those at DMACC. He has published articles and contributed several chapters to books, including the Education chapter in Outside In: African-American History in Iowa. He married Avril Laughlin, R.N., B.S.N., of Northern Ireland in 1963 and they are blessed with 2 daughters, 2 sons, and 7 grandchildren. Since 1984, he has represented the majority interest in Farmers & Merchants State Bank in Winterset, Iowa.
