Use the Genealogy Collection

The library has an extensive collection of genealogical materials including local family histories, cemetery records and other items of interest.

The Genealogy/Local History Room at the library has Osceola newspapers on microfilm dating back to 1863 (incomplete), and nearly complete from 1883. Also available on microfilm are the Clarke County birth, death and marriage records (from the formation of the county ca 1852 up to the early 20th century), the first 5 county will books, a few probate records, and all Clarke Co. censuses, federal and state (from 1856). We also have census microfilm for some of our surrounding counties. On the book shelves we have how-to books on various genealogy topics, family histories, and histories and genealogies from various localities around Iowa and the rest of the United States. Our Clarke County books include cemetery transcriptions, newspaper scrapbooks, compiled records of local towns, schools, veterans, atlases, etc. All of the above are for in-library use only.

The library now has our complete collection of Clarke County newspapers digitized on our library computers. They can be searched for any word, name or phrase. Searches may be through the entire collection or narrowed by date. Results may be printed for the same .15 charge as a photocopy. These digitized newspapers can now be accessed anywhere online by following this link: http://osceola.advantage-preservation.com

To be checked out by library patrons are a number of good how-to books on the library shelves. Travelers coming to Osceola to do research may be interested to know that wireless internet access is provided here.

The genealogy room is open during regular library hours. Photocopies are available from both books and microfilm for .15 each page in the library. Requests for research help must be limited to indexed sources and brief requests. The librarians are not able to do research by phone, mail or email, except for the simplest requests, but encourage family researchers to come to the library.

The Clarke County usgenweb site includes some useful resources and information about the Clarke County Genealogical Society.
